Remote May 25, 2023 Do You Ask “What’s Right” In Your Remote Work Policy? Geoff Whiting — 2 min read What’s the right thing to do in a new situation? In conversations about the future of work, we hear this question many times. As governments explore pro-worker legislation and as some companies contemplate return to office policies, we understand there’s change in the world of workforce management. While some business decisions are straightforward, other require nuance. Let’s explore more about what it means to make the right decisions for your organization. An example of applying the “right thing” to remote teams What is the “right thing” to do when managing remote or hybrid teams? One of these right things is being responsible with personal data. If you track employee information, be sure to disclose this to employees. If you use it to make business decisions, explain how you use data and the rationale behind its use. A policy that does what’s right means that it adds the proper context to the information fueling business decisions, and it should do so in a way that builds trust with employees. An example solution: add a smart feedback loop One of the best ways to keep business decisions on the right track is to share metrics and give employees a way to offer feedback on systems and processes that slow them down. Further, an employee can use data to uncover unproductive meetings, or to highlight the tasks that could be made more efficient through automation. Asking “what’s right” and involving teams in that discussion is how you spot issues and opportunities early instead of discovering negative trends before they’ve affected morale. When managers view feedback not as complaints but as conversations, there’s a chance to discover more about your organization’s efficiency. You’ve hired trusted team members to help grow your team and company. Reinforce that trust by being transparent and encouraging employees to participate in company decisions.
