2020. Phew. What was that?\nLooking back at the last year feels like stepping off a carnival ride. It was a year unlike any other, and we mean that in so many ways.\nThe best way to describe it is to say 2020 was a year of ups and downs:\n\nA global pandemic brought restrictions and curfews to our entire team. We’ve been remote since the beginning, but this still was a huge change in how people lived and worked. Goodbye coffee shops, our annual retreat, seeing family, traveling, weddings, and hugs. Not to mention the new fear of our team and families getting sick.\nOffices closed almost overnight and everyone adapted to remote work on the fly. According to a recent survey, nearly 75% of companies were remote in 2020, compared to only 23% before the pandemic. Kitchen tables became home offices and schools.\nThat led to a huge increase in new Hubstaff signups in March and April as teams scrambled to track time and work asynchronously.\nOur revenue went up and our churn went down in the past year, which are both good signs that we’re delivering the features and experience that newly and long-time remote teams need.\nOur own team grew by 44%.\n\n\nRemote work and the software that makes it possible became so popular that it led us to examine our own purpose. People who had never heard of proof of work or time tracking software were hesitant to try it.\nWe’ve always been proponents of remote work. But given this sudden shift, how can we help companies embrace it long-term? And how can our tools help people work smarter and with more flexibility?\nFinally, how can we reinforce that our tools aren’t built to run secretly in the background nor to keep a too-close eye on employees?\nThis year led us back to our guiding principles of transparency, access, and control:\n\nTransparency into how the software works at all times\nAccess to all of your own data, and the ability to see everything that a manager sees\nControl to start and stop the apps and grant permissions on your own device\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe were able to refocus as a team and work toward our shared goal of helping the business world transform to a remote-first workplace.\nNot long after, we went on the TODAY show to talk about the future of work. We believe remote work is here to stay. And we’re going to do what we can to make it as successful and beneficial for everyone as possible.\n\nBefore we look ahead, we’re going to dive into what 2020 looked like for Hubstaff and its remote team of 79.\n2020 by the numbers\nWe like numbers. They can’t tell the entire story (that’s what this post is for!) but they can show us how this year compared to the previous.\nHubstaff\n\nHubstaff Tasks\n\nThat’s what happened with our time tracking and Agile project management software. How did the company as a whole do?\nThe financials\nLike many remote software teams, we spent March and April onboarding customers who were suddenly leading teams from home. It was a whirlwind couple of months for us.\nEven though stay home orders ended at different times depending on location, we’re still seeing higher active users now than we did in 2019.\nThat’s partially because remote work will likely continue well into this year as companies realize how valuable distributed work is. It also helps that employees are pushing for it, with one survey finding that 96% of employees prefer some amount of remote work.\nSo how did 2020 look when it came to new signups and retention?\nYou might already know that Hubstaff is part of the Open Startups project. And by that, we mean talking about our people.\nIn 2020, our team grew to 79 professionals from around the world. We ended 2019 with 55 team members, which means we saw a 44% increase in team size.\nWe worried that team bonding would suffer since we couldn’t gather in person, but that wasn’t the case. We held a virtual retreat — it ruled — that even inspired some new bonding activities.\nNew team members joined in on discussions of what to watch, read, listen to, and what games to play. We celebrated our accomplishments and recognized those who embodied the Hubstaff values. We even started a weekly game night in two different time zones along with regular trivia.\n\nHere are some other highlights:\n\nMonthly AMAs helped us get to know our fellow Hubstaffers better.\nThe #adventure channel showcased our most creative attempts are pandemic-friendly fun (drive-in raves!).\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKelvin, once again, cycled a lot (3,000 miles though he wished it was more)\nNew babies and new homes\nOur #hubstars channel was a buzz. Here, Hubstaffers can recognize fellow team members, who then get a bonus for their hard work.\n\n\nOur proudest accomplishments\nWe asked Hubstaffers to share what they’re looking back on fondly from the past year. Here’s what they said.\n\nIn general, I’m proud of my development from the start, I have learned a lot of things.\nTo receive good feedback on my work at the end of the year.\nAlthough it wasn’t a personal accomplishment, seeing our CEO and co-founder Jared brown on The Today Show was definitely one of my proudest moments as a Hubstaffer.\nGetting the devops train moving 🙂\nBeing called “glue” for bringing people together.\nHelping two of our long-standing support team members get promoted to team lead.\nThe Hubstaff marketing design system\nThe reworks and results we made in the outreach team are my proudest accomplishments.\nContinuing to improve our products, processes, and teams.\nI’m proud of the big base of support focused content we created which should be extremely helpful to our existing user base.\nTook over a huge task and kept enthusiasm while working on it\n\nVirtual high fives to our whole team\nAs you can see, we accomplished a lot this year as a team.\nWe also asked people to give a shout-out to their colleagues who made the year better. Okay.\n📈😷🧑🏻💻👨🏻🏫🏠\n👨💻🏠🎮\nChallenge, mental stability, fitness, family, food\nbarf city. poo-ville. so long.\nHard, challenging, missing some people\n\n Challenging and changing\nOur first virtual retreat was a Zoom-ing success\nZoom, if you’re reading this: Yes, we are accepting sponsors for our next annual retreat. But only in the form of risotto.\n\nIt wasn’t beach volleyball in Mexico or outdoor dining in Lisbon but we made the best of it.\nWe even had a pretty stellar kick-off with a keynote from Job van de Voort (!), who is the co-founder and CEO of Remote. Previously, Job was the VP of product at GitLab.\nAfter that, we broke up into teams for the hackathon. There were different activities every day such as a murder mystery game and online poker. Some of our colleagues led workshops and others gave walking tours of their cities.\nCoordinating a schedule for as many time zones as we occupy was not easy. But it did make for a pretty colorful spreadsheet.\n\nOur virtual retreat was a lot of fun with a Zoom hangover. Ask a remote team to be on camera for four days straight and you can expect a lot of napping afterward.\nWhat stood out the most? In our team’s own words:\n\nSergey driving along the streets of Herceg-Novi.\n\n\nPlaying Among Us with everyone on discord\n\n\nSergey showing his pet-rock\n\n\nMaking risotto with people from around the world! It was 11 AM for me, but 2 PM for the rest of the US team who participated, and dinner time for people in Portugal and Russia and Eastern Europe. We still got to hang out and make a meal together. It was a lot of fun watching people cook for their families, especially when they’re not the ones who usually do the cooking.\n\n\nJob van de Voort’s keynote\n\n\nI have many great memories from both retreats. Playing volleyball at the beach and having drinks with the team in Cancun, and beers at night with the guys and walking through the streets of Lisbon.\n\n\nSergey’s pet rock and live streams\n\n\nOnline poker\n\n\nThe murder mystery or playing League of Legend with everyone. Good laughs, good times, lots of fun.\n\n\nI learned a lot from some of the lectures, specifically the investing lecture\n\n\nThanks to Job van de Voort for our virtual retreat keynote!\n\nRisotto cooking class led by Eyal\n\nBertrams’ risotto\n\nVirtual murder mystery. The fun of an escape room without the fear of never leaving a dark, windowless closet.\n\nKitty led the team on a walking tour of Las Vegas.\nIn-between, we shared meals and happy hours and got to know each other a little better.\nWhat we’re looking forward to in the next year\nFirst, let’s give a big old good riddance to the pandemic and its effects in 2020. There’s a light at the end of the tunnel and there’s reason to believe…\n\nMaybe this year will be better than the last\n— Counting Crows (@CountingCrows) January 1, 2021\n\nHere’s how our CEO, Jared Brown, summed up the year.\n As we get ready to put 2020 in the rearview mirror, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on what we’ve accomplished this year. 🤔\nWhile 2020 has been a successful year for our company, it hasn’t been without its hardships.\nMany of us have been worried about the wellbeing of our loved ones and our own health during COVID. We’ve had to deal with the mental aspects of not having the usual social outlets or ability to live life as we normally do during much of the year. Not to mention homeschooling! Ugh! Our team members in the U.S. and especially in Belarus have had to deal with curfews, protests, and civil unrest. It’s certainly not been an easy year. 😞\nBut we got through it and we are stronger for it. I truly appreciate all of the hard work you put in everyday.\nHere’s to 2021. 💪\nLooking ahead\nWe’ll leave you with our hopes and dreams.
